What do I do if Etsy suspends my shop?

Read the notice properly, respond once through Etsy's official appeal route with evidence attached, and do not open a second shop while you wait. That is the whole shape of it, and I'll walk through each part in order, but if the email only landed this morning, take a breath first. You're allowed to be frightened by this, because it is frightening, and anyone telling you to just stay positive has never watched their income switch off in one email.

My own Etsy years ran on the same arrangement yours do, the shop existed at Etsy's discretion the whole time, and I knew that in theory. Theory is painless though. You don't feel it until the morning it stops being theory, so I won't be breezy with you, and I won't promise you an outcome either, because I don't know your case and neither does anyone offering certainty in a Facebook group right now. What I can give you is the first hour, calmly.

Why has Etsy suspended my shop?

Start with the notice itself, read slowly, twice. In the panic most of us skim it once and come away holding only the word suspended, but Etsy usually names a reason category even when the wording feels vague, and the reason changes what you do next.

The common ones, and none of them means your business is over:

• an intellectual property complaint, and a fair number of these are automated or simply mistaken, filed against the wrong item or the wrong shop
• a listing that's fallen foul of the handmade or prohibited items policies
• payment or identity verification that hasn't cleared on their side, which is boring and fixable and catches out plenty of completely honest sellers
• a sudden change in account activity, like a spike in orders or new bank details
• an older case that never quite got closed and has come back around

Write down exactly which one your notice cites, along with any case number and any deadline, because everything you do from here flows from that. If yours is an IP complaint, it's worth knowing the machinery cuts both ways, I've written about what to do when someone copies your designs, and the same process that exists to protect makers does get pointed at makers by mistake.

The first hour is reading, not writing

How do I appeal an Etsy suspension?

Once, through the official route named in the notice, calmly, and with evidence rather than argument.

One clear, factual reply that covers what the notice claims, what is actually true, and the proof attached. If the question is whether you make your items, send the things only a real maker has: supplier invoices for your materials, process photographs, dated design files, the messy workbench photos you never thought would matter. If it's verification, send exactly what they asked for, matching the details on your account exactly. Evidence does the arguing so you don't have to, and in a queue full of pleading, the reply with the invoices attached is the one that stands out.

Then comes the hard part, which is stopping. Not a string of follow-up messages, not a fresh appeal every morning, because extra messages don't move you up the queue and they can muddy the case you've just laid out so carefully.

And however tempting it looks at 2am, do not open a second shop to trade from while you wait. I want to say this plainly because it usually makes things considerably worse. Etsy connects accounts through the details behind them, things like bank accounts and addresses, so the new shop tends to get caught as well, and it reads as evasion in a review that might have been about to go your way.

Be ready for the timeline to be longer than feels bearable. A human review takes what it takes, some sellers hear back within days and some wait weeks, and silence in the meantime is not a verdict.

One more thing, and it matters. If your case has real legal weight, a genuine IP dispute rather than a mistaken one, or a large amount of your money being held, get proper advice from someone qualified. I'm a coach who sold on Etsy, not a lawyer, and nothing in this post is legal advice.

What should I do while I'm waiting?

Protect what you can still reach, starting with your own work.

If you still have any access at all, download everything you're able to. Your order history, your listing details, and the customer addresses you're permitted to hold for orders you still owe. Take your own copies of every photograph and every product description too, off Etsy and onto your own computer, because those are yours and you may want them somewhere else one day. Rebuilding from nothing is the thing that actually breaks people, far more than the suspension itself does, so make sure nothing you've made exists only inside a platform you currently can't get into.

Then look after the customers you can still see. Outstanding orders still need making, posting or refunding, and none of that pauses while your appeal sits in a queue. Somebody out there is waiting for a parcel with no idea any of this is happening, and how you treat her this week is one of the few things still entirely in your control.

Will I get my Etsy shop back?

I don't know, and I'd be gently wary of anyone who says they do, in either direction. Plenty of suspensions are resolved, the verification ones clear when the documents go through, and mistaken IP complaints do get overturned when the evidence is good. Some shops are back within days, some wait weeks, and some don't come back at all, and I won't pretend otherwise, because you'd rather know the truth than be handed comfort I can't back up.

What I can tell you is that working the process calmly and completely is the only route back there is, so for now, that is where all of your energy goes.

And then later, once the shop is back or once you know for certain it isn't coming, there's a quieter thing worth sitting with, and I'm careful saying it because today is not the day for lessons. Every route to every customer you have ever served ran through somebody else's front door, and one email closed it. No part of that is your fault, and Etsy was a perfectly sensible place to build. But when the dust settles, you might want one way of reaching the people who love your work that no platform can switch off, which is why makers need an email list, even a tiny one.

When you're ready for that part, and only when, the Handmade Launch List is where you build one way of reaching people that nobody can switch off, and it costs nothing. It will still be there once the immediate fire is out, and the fire comes first.

There's a fair chance you'll get your shop back. The question worth asking afterwards is who, apart from Etsy, knows how to reach the people who love what you make
