What do I do if someone copies my designs?

Report the direct copies through the marketplace's own process, leave the merely similar ones alone however much they sting, and put the rest of your energy into the one part of your work that nobody can relist. I know that answer lands a bit flat against how the moment actually feels, because the moment is usually 11 o'clock at night, and it's usually a customer messaging you a link with the words "thought you should see this", and then you're sitting in the dark looking at your own design in somebody else's shop with your stomach somewhere around the floor.

I made things for years in markets where the line between inspiration and theft is thin. Glitter fabric hairbows when there was no money coming in, and hairbows might be the most copied product category on the internet, everybody's bow within an inch of everybody else's, so I know how hard the real question actually is: is that my design, or is it just a bow? That question, however horrible it feels at midnight, turns out to be the exact one that decides what you can do about any of it.

Can I actually do anything legally about it?

Sometimes, and I want to be careful here, because I'm not a lawyer, this isn't legal advice, and an evergreen blog post is a genuinely bad place to get a legal strategy from. What I can give you honestly is the general shape of the thing.

Copyright protects a specific creative expression. The actual pattern you drew, the actual photographs you took, the actual words in your listing, and in the UK that protection arrives automatically, no registering anything. What it generally doesn't protect is an idea, a style, or a technique.

So the seller who's now making hairbows too, or using the same stitch you use, or has very obviously wandered through your shop for inspiration, is usually not something you can act on. Similar is, for the most part, allowed, however sickening it is to look at. What the law cares about is copying the specific thing you made, which is a much narrower gate than the midnight version of you wants it to be.

Two honest complications on top of that. The rules are different in every country, so a copycat on the other side of the world is a far harder problem than one in Britain, and often not a solvable one at any price that makes sense for a small shop. And if there's serious money involved, a proper business reproducing your actual patterns at scale, that's the moment to pay somebody qualified for an hour of their time rather than take your plan from blog posts, including mine.

One quiet practical thing while you're deciding: keep your evidence. Your original photos with their dates, your sketches, the date you first listed. If this ever does become a formal complaint, being able to show you were first is half the job done.

Should I report them, or call them out publicly?

Report, absolutely. Every marketplace has a process for exactly this, Etsy has an intellectual property report tucked into its help pages, and that form is the first practical move because it costs you nothing and it's the route the platform actually responds to.

The strongest version of that report is stolen photographs. A similar-looking product is arguable all day long, but your photo is your photo, taken in your house with your light on your table, and a shop using your actual images is doing the clearest kind of copying there is. If your photos have been lifted, report it that day, not next month.

The public call-out is the one I'd gently take out of your hands. Naming and shaming feels wonderful for about an hour, and then you've dragged your whole audience into a fight they never asked to join, your shop's public face becomes a dispute instead of your work, and every now and again the pile-on lands on somebody who genuinely arrived at a similar idea on their own, because in handmade that happens far more often than any of us want to admit.

There's no walking one of those back.

Will the copy actually take my sales?

Far less often than it feels like it will, and I mean that as comfort rather than dismissal.

Copying a photo takes a minute. Copying the making doesn't, and most copies are visibly worse the moment they arrive: the seams, the finish, the fabric that looked identical in the listing and very much isn't. The buyer hunting for the cheapest possible version of your thing was rarely going to pay your price in the first place, which stings to accept but changes the maths completely.

And it's worth sitting with what a copycat actually is for a second. They copied that design because it had already sold, which means they are permanently behind you. You can make the next thing, and all they can do is wait for it.

Every hour spent patrolling their shop is an hour guarding last season instead of building the next one, and only one of those was ever going to grow anything, in much the same way that more listings were never going to increase your sales however diligently you kept adding them. Busy work that feels like defending the business is still busy work.

How do I actually protect my work then?

By leaning on the part they couldn't take. What they took was a design. What they could not take is that your customers know your hands made theirs, and that is the entire reason anybody pays handmade prices when a cheaper thing that photographs the same is sitting 2 rows down in the same search results.

But have you considered that this protection only works if your customers can actually tell it's you? A shop where every buyer arrives from a search box has none of it, because the person searching doesn't know you, and she doesn't know the copycat either. To her you're 2 thumbnails and a price difference, and the cheaper thumbnail wins that contest often enough to hurt.

The protection lives in the relationship. The buyers who know your name, who've watched the work come together, who hear from you directly when something new is on the way, won't be tempted sideways by a knock-off, because what she's paying for is the fact that you made it, and a copy can't offer her that at any price. That's why a maker needs an email list far more than she needs a takedown letter, and it's the one defence that gets stronger every month instead of resetting with every new copycat.

Building that kind of following is more than one post can teach, and the first piece of it is the Handmade Launch List, free, which gives the people who want the real thing a way to stay close to it. If this post found you at that horrible 11pm moment, this might be exactly the right week to start.

Everything they copied fitted inside a photograph. The reason anyone buys handmade never has
