Do I actually need an email list as a maker?

You do, and sooner than you think. An email list is the only audience a maker actually owns. Etsy rents you strangers through a search box, social media rents you reach through an algorithm, and both can change the terms whenever they feel like it. The list of people who handed over their email address because they love what you make is yours outright, it goes wherever you go, and you can launch to it on any day you choose.

I want to walk through why that matters so much, because nearly everything that comes up when you search for email marketing advice is written by people who have never packed an order at 11pm or stood at a craft fair in the rain. I ran a fabric business for years, sold on Etsy myself, and the list is the quiet engine underneath everything I now teach about launching instead of listing. It is also the one thing I would rebuild first if I lost everything tomorrow.

Why the list beats followers

Every audience you build lives somewhere, and the question worth asking is who controls the door.

On Etsy, a customer buys from you, loves the thing, would happily buy again, and there is no way to tell her when the next collection is ready. Etsy keeps her email address, and the pair of you are left hoping the search results introduce you a second time.

On Instagram or TikTok you at least know who follows you, but the algorithm decides which handful of them see any given post, and that dial gets turned without warning or explanation.

An email lands in front of the person you sent it to. That is the entire difference, and it is why a list of 300 buyers will quietly outsell a follower count ten times the size.

My best proof is a Christmas launch from my fabric years. For six weeks beforehand I teased the new collection to my list, little glimpses of the prints, the story behind them, samples slipped into parcels I was already posting anyway. By launch weekend there was nothing left to do but send one email. That weekend did £12,000. Six weeks of steady teasing sat underneath it, so I'm not pretending it was effortless, but by the time I pressed send the work was finished. The selling was already done, weeks before, with people who already cared. The email just opened the till.

But I'm a maker, not a marketer

I know exactly what "email marketing" sounds like from the outside. Countdown timers, and those automated sequences that follow you round the internet shouting LAST CHANCE at people who never asked. If that were the job I wouldn't do it either, it's icky, and it doesn't even work on the sort of people who buy handmade.

What actually works is closer to texting a friend who happens to love what you make. You tell them what you're working on, you show them the messy middle, you let them peek at the new thing before anyone else does, and once in a while you tell them the doors are open. Value first, ask second, and no begging anywhere.

And you already have the skill. Every time you've chatted to a customer at a fair, or written a little note to tuck into a parcel, you've done exactly what a good email does. The only new part is that instead of saying it to one person, you're saying it to everyone who asked to hear from you.

What do I actually send them?

Less than you fear, and less polished than you think.

Between launches: what's on your workbench, the colourway you nearly chose instead, the thing that went wrong this week and what you did about it. People who buy handmade are buying the maker as much as the object, and this is where they get to know you. Once a week is lovely, once a fortnight is absolutely fine.

Before a launch: little previews. A glimpse of the new thing, the story behind it, look what's coming. This is the teasing that made my Christmas weekend work, and each one costs you a photo and a few sentences.

You don't need a big list or a big product before it starts paying for itself either. My first digital product was £2.50 and sold 157 times, which is £392.50 and nobody is putting that on a billboard, but every one of those sales came from an email, from people who already knew me, with no search box involved anywhere.

How to start one this week

The tech lift is genuinely small, and free at the size you're starting at.

• Pick any free email platform and set up one signup form. An afternoon, tops.
• Make one small freebie your kind of buyer would actually want, a care guide or a printable that helps them enjoy the thing they bought.
• Put the invitation where your buyers already are. A card in every parcel, a line in your dispatch messages.
• Send your first email before the list feels "big enough". Three subscribers is a list. Talk to them.

The mistake is waiting until the next collection is ready and then scrambling to build an audience in a fortnight. Start now, while there's nothing to sell, because a list you've been kind to for three months is already warm before you ever ask it for anything.

If you'd like it built rather than explained, that's the Handmade Launch List, free, and you come out of it with a working sign-up form and the words already out there pointing people at it. You finish holding the thing rather than a plan to make it.

The algorithm decides who sees your next post. Nobody decides who gets your next email except you
