How do I compete with AI and dropshipping on Etsy?

You will not out-list a machine, and the sooner you stop trying the better, because everything that makes the AI and dropship shops win is a game you were never going to beat them at. They can list 40 things before breakfast, undercut you to a price that wouldn't cover your materials, and never once wait for glaze to dry or thread to set. So the honest answer is to stop fighting them on price and volume, and to compete instead on the one thing they cannot fake, which is that a real person made the thing, and real people know her.

I sold handmade on Etsy for years, quilts and bags sewn from cotton I used to import from America, hairbows I made at the kitchen table in a stretch when there wasn't much money coming in. So I know the particular sting of watching a shop full of soulless copies outrank the thing you stayed up until 2am finishing, and I want to say plainly that it isn't in your head and it isn't you being precious. The marketplace genuinely did get harder, and pretending otherwise would be no use to you at all.

Why is Etsy full of AI and dropshipped stuff now?

Because of what the search box rewards, and it was never craft. Etsy leans towards whoever lists the most, refreshes the most, and sits at the price the algorithm likes best, and that happens to be exactly the home turf of anyone running a shop with no hands in it. A person generating listings from a prompt, or shipping someone else's factory stock, can feed that machine all day without ever touching a material. You, making one real thing at a time, cannot, and you shouldn't want to.

The trap is that the flood makes you want to become a little bit more like them to survive it. List a bit faster, drop your prices to sit under the copies, pour another weekend into keywords. I understand the pull of it completely, and it is the exact thing I'd steer you away from, because you will lose that particular race and you'll be worn out by the time you finish losing it. Chasing more listings to fix this is the same lie that had all of us stuck in the first place, and I've written before about why more listings won't increase your sales.

Etsy flagged my handmade item as AI or mass-produced. What do I do?

This one is a genuinely cruel irony, and it's happening to real makers: you hand-make every piece, and the platform flags your shop as if you're the fake. If that's landed on you, treat it the way you'd treat any suspension notice, calmly and once, with evidence rather than argument.

Send the things only a real maker has. Process photographs at each stage, supplier invoices for your raw materials, dated design files, the half-finished shots on the messy bench you never thought would matter. Evidence does the arguing so you don't have to. The machinery here is the same one that gets pointed the wrong way over copying too, and the calm-first-hour approach I set out in what to do if Etsy suspends your shop applies just as much when the charge is that your own handmade work somehow isn't handmade.

So how does a real maker actually compete?

You stop competing for the search slot, and you start building the people.

Think about what a machine can and can't reach. It can copy your product photo, guess your price, and clone your keywords by lunchtime. What it cannot do is be the person someone already decided they wanted to buy from. Someone who follows you, who watched the thing take shape on your table over a week, who knows your name, does not open Etsy and sort by lowest price. The cheaper copy can be sitting in the very next search result and it won't matter, because they didn't come for a product category, they came for you.

That is the whole game, and it's one the machines are structurally locked out of. My best ever run selling handmade was a Christmas that did £12,000 in a single weekend, and none of it came from beating anyone on price. It came from 6 weeks of quietly teasing what was coming and slipping fabric samples into parcels, so that by the time the collection actually went live, the people were already waiting with their diaries open. A dropship shop can copy the product. It cannot copy 6 weeks of a real person letting you in.

This is the difference between listing and hoping, and launching to people who already want it. It's why makers need an email list, even a small one, and why the customers who come back for you are worth more than any amount of fresh traffic the algorithm might send once and never again.

How do I start this week?

Two things, and neither costs you money.

First, put the maker back into the shop. Your face, your hands, the workbench mid-mess, the bit where it goes wrong and you fix it. Every place a buyer might feel a real human is a place the copies can't follow you, and most makers hide exactly that part because it feels unprofessional. It's the opposite. It's your entire advantage.

Second, get one way of reaching your people that Etsy doesn't own. A single link where someone who loves your work can hear from you directly, so the next thing you make doesn't depend on a search box noticing you. Setting that up costs nothing, and if you'd rather be walked through it step by step that's the Handmade Launch List, which is also free, but the part that matters is that you do it at all, with me or on your own, because the machines can have the race to the bottom.

A machine can copy your product by lunchtime, and it still won't be the person they came for
