Why am I getting views on Etsy but no sales?

You're getting views but no sales because a view is a stranger who typed something into a search box roughly 4 seconds ago, has never heard of you, and is comparing your listing against a screen full of other shops selling something similar. Persuading that stranger to hand over money on first sight was always going to be brutal, so a shop with plenty of views and nothing to show for them is usually working exactly the way Etsy search was designed to work, a strange sort of comfort, I know, when you're staring at the stats page.

I sold quilts and bags on Etsy for years, and I know exactly what it does to you to watch the views tick up all week while the orders don't, refreshing the page on the off chance the number was wrong. It took me far too long to understand what those views actually were, and I only really got it from the other side of the counter, as somebody else's browsing stranger.

Why don't views turn into sales?

Because a view and a buyer are two different people, even when they're technically the same person.

The view is someone mid-search. She typed her search into the box moments ago, she has a row of other tabs open, and yours is one of them. She has never heard of you, she never even read your shop name, and everything she will ever know about you has to fit inside one listing page read at scrolling speed.

Buying from you means picking your tab over every other tab, on first sight, with her own money. Some listings do win that contest, and I'll go through the honest checks in a minute, but hold onto the frame. 400 views with no sales means 400 strangers glanced at your work mid-comparison, and a glance from a stranger was never a promise of anything.

This post is about the conversion problem, where the traffic arrives and the till stays quiet. If your problem is no views at all, that's the opposite complaint, it lives in titles, tags and the first photo, and I've covered it separately in no views on Etsy. Two different problems, two different fixes, and it does my head in a bit how often they get lumped together as "do better SEO".

What should I check on the listing itself?

Go through these as the stranger, not as the maker. You know everything about the thing you made. She knows only what's on the page, and she's reading it at speed.

Start with the photos. The first one won the click, but the rest have to close the sale, and that's a different job entirely. She needs the photo that answers "how big is it really", the one that shows it in a real room or on a real person, and the close-up that proves the making is what the price says it is. A listing with one brilliant photo and a handful of afterthoughts loses her at the exact moment she was interested.

Then read the description asking one question: would she still have to message me before she could buy? Size, materials, how long until it dispatches, how to care for it, whether the colours in the photos are true to life. Every question the listing leaves open is a reason to close the tab, because messaging a stranger and waiting for a reply is more effort than clicking the next result.

Check the last step too, because Etsy puts the postage cost and the dispatch time right next to the buy button. A postage charge that's a big slice of the item price, or a dispatch window of weeks on something she needs for a birthday, quietly kills sales at the final second, and it never shows up anywhere in your stats as the reason.

And look honestly at the price, because cheap doesn't always read as tempting. A handmade price sitting far below everything around it makes a stranger wonder what's wrong with it rather than feel like she's found a bargain, and she has nothing else about you to go on.

That last point tells you where this is really heading. I once bought the same template twice from the same Etsy seller without realising it was the same shop until afterwards. I liked her work enough to pay for it twice, and I still couldn't have told you her name. That's how little a stranger registers about who is selling, and I was one of the strangers in somebody's stats.

Why does the same listing sell for somebody else?

Because every fix on that list is you trying to win a decision from someone who has known you for 4 seconds, and there's a version of the same listing that never has to fight that fight.

Have you noticed how differently a listing performs when the person looking at it already knows you? Someone who has watched you make the thing doesn't zoom in on the close-ups to check whether it's worth the money, because she watched it being made. She doesn't need the dispatch time spelling out, because she's seen you posting orders before. She isn't comparing tabs, because she came looking for you rather than for a search term.

Warmth is the conversion lever nobody sells you a course on. The whole industry will sell you help with the stranger, better photos, sharper keywords, cleverer pricing, and those things genuinely matter, which is why I've just spent half this post on them. Almost nobody teaches the other route, which is making sure fewer of the people landing on your listing are strangers in the first place.

The same product, the same photos, the same price, and a completely different result, purely because of who is looking.

What actually changes the number?

Warm people, gathered somewhere you can reach them, which for me has always meant an email list.

The thing that finally moved my own numbers was not a better photograph, it was writing about what the thing would turn into rather than what it was. With the tote bags I made, I stopped listing the specification on its own and started describing going to the farmers market, putting apples and potatoes into a bag that had apples printed on the front. The double seams were still in there, mind, I never took them out. They just stopped standing on their own, because the seams meant it would hold, which meant no plastic bag going to landfill, which meant one less thing to think about on a Saturday morning. Same bag, same stitching, completely different listing.

That is what a description is for, and it is why two shops selling a nearly identical thing can convert so differently. One of them is telling you what it is made of. The other is letting you stand in the market holding it.

If you're wondering where those warm people come from when all you have is an Etsy shop and a trickle of views, they come from the buyers and the nearly-buyers you're already getting, invited onto a list you own. I've written about why a maker needs an email list at all if the whole idea feels a bit foreign.

Gathering those people and warming them up over weeks instead of seconds is what the Handmade Launch System walks you through, a date picked well in advance and the runway in front of it, so the collection opens to people who had already decided. The views you're already getting are proof your work is good enough to be looked at... the next part is about who's doing the looking.

A view is a stranger deciding in 4 seconds. Think what she'd do with 6 weeks
