Should I use Etsy vacation mode when I go on holiday?

Mostly no, and I say that as somebody who is about to spend a whole post trying to talk you into taking the holiday anyway. Vacation mode sounds like a pause button, but what it actually does is close your shop, and there is a way to go away with the shop still open, where the promise you're making stays honest and you come home to a stack of orders instead of a fortnight of nothing.

The help articles never mention that the hardest part of a maker holiday happens before you go, that fortnight of dread after booking it, doing sums in your head about what closing will cost and feeling guilty for wanting a rest at all. I know that feeling far too well, because I grew my business to roughly £264,000 over 3 years without ever properly stopping, and it cost me a genuine mental breakdown and a stretch of 2 hours of sleep a night with a newborn. So when I say the holiday matters more than the shop does, that isn't a warm sentiment I borrowed from a wellness account. I paid full price to find it out.

What does Etsy vacation mode actually do?

It takes your listings out of circulation. Nobody can buy while it's on, which sounds obvious, but the part that stings is what happens to everything those listings had quietly built up. Months of views, favourites and sales history, all the little signals telling Etsy your shop is alive and worth showing to people, stop feeding themselves the day you flick the switch.

And coming back is slower than anyone expects. The listings reappear, and then you sit in a strangely quiet shop for days or sometimes weeks while it all winds back up, wondering if you've broken something. It's the same slow rebuild I wrote about in why Etsy sales suddenly drop, except this time you booked it in yourself.

So the true cost of vacation mode is closer to a month of momentum than a fortnight of it, and that's before counting the orders that would have arrived while you were away.

How do I go on holiday without closing my Etsy shop?

You stay open and you change the promise. That's honestly the whole method.

Before you go, extend the processing time on your listings so that every order placed while you're away carries a dispatch date you can genuinely meet. If you leave on the 1st and get back on the 12th, set your times so orders promise dispatch from the 14th, giving yourself a day or two of breathing room for the pile that will be waiting.

Then say it plainly, in your shop announcement and in the listings themselves: orders placed between the 1st and the 12th will post on the 14th. No mystery, no small print, just one person telling another when her parcel will move.

If you want to soften the wait, add a small sweetener. A discount on that order, or a little extra tucked into the parcel when it finally goes out, framed as a thank you for their patience rather than an apology for existing. You haven't done anything wrong, you've gone on holiday, which people with ordinary jobs manage every single year without writing anyone a sorry note.

And buyers are far more understanding about all of this than makers ever expect, especially when they're buying from a person rather than a faceless shop. "The maker is away and your order will post on the 14th" is a perfectly normal sentence to a human being. Most find it quite lovely, actually... it confirms the exact thing they hoped for when they chose handmade over a warehouse, that there's a real person on the other end, and that she has a life.

Do all of that and instead of reopening a dead shop, you come home to a fortnight of orders, dispatch dates you can hit, and a shop that never went dark.

When should I actually use vacation mode?

There are times when closing is exactly right, and I'd be doing you a disservice if I skipped them.

If you're ill, if you've lost someone, if life has landed on you in a way where you genuinely cannot promise that an order placed today will ever get made, close the shop. The extended dispatch method only works because the date you're promising is real, and the moment you can't stand behind that date the whole thing turns against you, because a promise you can't keep costs far more than a closed shop ever will. Broken promises become refunds, cases and 1-star reviews that outlive whatever caused them.

A closed shop rebuilds. Slowly, as I said, but it rebuilds. So the question to ask yourself is simply whether you can guarantee the promise. If you can, extend your times and go. If you can't, switch vacation mode on with a completely clear conscience, and deal with the shop when you're back on your feet.

Why does closing for 2 weeks feel so scary?

Because underneath the whole vacation mode question sits a fear worth dragging into the light: that if you stop for 2 weeks, the shop forgets you and you start again from nothing.

I won't tell you that fear is silly, because it's completely rational. When your visibility is rented from a search algorithm, the algorithm genuinely does move on without you, and Etsy holds nobody's place in the queue out of loyalty. That fear is the honest price of building on rented ground, and it's why booking a holiday can produce the exact dread I opened with.

But have you considered that people don't work like algorithms? A list of people who love your work does not forget you while you're away. They're still there on the 14th, still wanting the thing only you make, and one email saying you're back and here's what's coming lands just the same whether you were gone 2 days or 2 weeks. That's the quiet difference between renting your audience and owning a list, and it's also the difference between a business you can leave for a fortnight and one you're chained to.

If you'd like to start building that side of things, the Handmade Launch List is free and it leaves you with somewhere for people to sign up and a reason for them to bother. It's also, not coincidentally, the thing that makes holidays stop being frightening.

If your business can't survive you having a holiday, then somewhere along the way it stopped being yours, and it's worth sitting quietly with who's actually in charge of it
