Why can't I stop checking my Etsy stats?

Because checking is the only lever Etsy actually gives you. When there is genuinely nothing you can do to change today's sales, refreshing the app at least feels like doing something, and that makes this a design problem rather than a discipline problem. You know the shape of the day it builds: the phone checked before your feet have touched the floor, the refresh on the way past the kettle, and then a view count at 2 o'clock that quietly decides what sort of afternoon you're going to have.

I'm not writing this from the far side of it, and I want that on the record before any advice turns up. I'm terrible for comparing myself to people who are months or years ahead of me, I'll see someone else's numbers and just sit there wondering how on earth you get from here to there, and checking your own stats 6 times a day is that same wiring pointed at your own shop. It isn't solved for me. I still work at it.

Is it normal to check my Etsy stats this much?

Almost every maker does this, they just don't post about it. It gets worse when things are quiet too, which is a cruel bit of timing, because the fortnight when nothing is selling is exactly the fortnight the checking ramps up. Silence is the thing you're trying to read meaning into, and the app will happily let you try all day. If your shop has gone properly quiet there's usually a less personal explanation than the one you're telling yourself at 11pm.

And I'd gently take the word "pathetic" off the table, because I know some of you are using it about yourselves. Checking whether the thing you've poured yourself into is going to work was never vanity. You made something with your own hands, you put it somewhere public, and now you're watching to see if the world responds. That's about as human as behaviour gets, and the sellers who look serene about their stats are mostly just checking in private.

Why do I keep refreshing when nothing changes?

Have a look at what Etsy hands you on an ordinary Tuesday. You can't email your past buyers, because Etsy holds their addresses and its rules stop you marketing to them. You can't ask the algorithm why it moved you. You can't make today's browsers arrive any faster. Once the listings are up and the photos are done, the one thing in the whole shop that responds when you touch it is the stats screen.

So your thumb goes there. Refreshing feels like action because it's the only action on offer, and your brain would rather do a useless thing than sit with doing nothing, which is quite a reasonable position for a brain to take when you think about it.

The bit that does my head in is that the shame lands on you, when the design belongs to Etsy. A shop that gave you real levers to pull would produce sellers who pull levers. A shop that gives you a scoreboard produces sellers who watch the scoreboard.

How do I stop checking my Etsy stats so much?

Not with willpower, because willpower loses to a phone in your pocket every single time, so give the job to structure instead.

Check on a schedule instead of on impulse. Once a week, same day, kettle on, and I'd genuinely put it in the calendar. Once a week tells you more than 6 times a day ever will, because daily numbers are noise and you can't see a trend from inside one afternoon. A slow Tuesday means nothing on its own. A month of Tuesdays is actually information.

Before you open the app, decide what number would change what you do. This is the question that quietly ends most of the checking, because most of the numbers we watch wouldn't change a single decision we make this week. If favourites spiked on one listing, you'd make more in that style, so favourites earn their look. If views wobbled by 12 either way... what were you going to do differently? A number that changes nothing you do is a mood, and you're allowed to stop consuming it.

Take the app off your home screen while you're at it. Not off your phone, just off the front page, so the check becomes a decision rather than a reflex your thumb makes without you. It's a small daft fix and it beats any amount of discipline.

And when the weekly look does come round, spend it on the stat that is easiest to scroll past, which is where your traffic came from. Views tell you how last week felt. Traffic sources tell you what to do about next week: if it's mostly Etsy search, your titles and tags are the work; if your own social is sending people, that's working and deserves more of you. It's the one number on that whole screen that can change something that hasn't happened yet.

What should I be looking at instead?

Notice what everything on the dashboard has in common. Every view and every favourite, and the sale if there was one, had already happened by the time you saw it, decided somewhere else, by shoppers you can't contact and an algorithm you can't ask a single question. By the time a number reaches your screen it's history you're rereading rather than a lever you're pulling, and no amount of rereading changes what it says.

But have you considered what it would feel like to have one thing on your list that you could actually do today that makes a sale more likely? I don't mean making another listing and hoping, that's feeding the same machine and then going back to watching the screen. I mean something you decide. For me that turned out to be an email list, because an email is a lever that lives entirely on your side of the counter: you choose when it goes and who it reaches, and nothing sits in the middle deciding whether it deserves to be seen.

I'd love to tell you the checking stops once you've got a lever like that, and it doesn't, or it hasn't for me anyway. I still catch myself comparing, I still open screens I have no business opening. What changes is that checking stops being the only move you've got, and a habit loses a lot of its grip the day it has to compete with something that actually works.

If you want somewhere to start, The Handmade Launch List is where you build one, it's free, and it's about an hour rather than another thing added to the list you'll get to eventually. It won't stop you opening the app. It does give the week a job that isn't refreshing.

You already know roughly what the number is going to say, and you're going to check anyway. So am I
