How do I sell handmade without Etsy?

You can sell handmade without Etsy and keep your Etsy shop open at the same time. What you're actually trying to escape is the dependence: the way every sale has to come through a search box that introduces you to a stranger who has never heard of you. The fix is owning the relationship with your buyers yourself, which in practice means an email list you can launch to, so Etsy becomes one of the places the money changes hands instead of the thing your whole income hangs from.

I know why you typed that search. The fees creep up, the algorithm changes again, and one morning you realise a company you've never spoken to can quietly turn your income down like a dimmer switch. That feeling is real and worth listening to. Most of the advice you'll find just answers the wrong version of the question.

Why "just move to Shopify" misses the point

Nearly every article on this subject hands you a list of other places to put your products. Shopify, Amazon Handmade, Folksy, your own website, a craft fair. I understand the appeal, because it feels like doing something.

But moving platforms swaps one landlord for another. If your plan on Shopify is still to put products up and wait to be found, you've carried the exact same problem into a much quieter room. Etsy at least has footfall. A brand new website has none until you bring your own, and nobody mentions that until you've paid for the theme.

The problem you're trying to solve is that a stranger has to find you fresh every single time you want a sale. Move that to Shopify and it comes with you, minus the traffic.

What selling without Etsy actually means

Etsy owns your customer list, and that one fact does more damage than the fees ever will.

Someone buys from you, loves the thing, would happily buy again, and you have no way of telling her when the next collection is ready. You're both standing there hoping the algorithm reintroduces you. That is the actual trap, and it stays a trap whichever marketplace you're on.

So selling without Etsy, properly understood, means the introduction stops being Etsy's job. You collect emails from the people who already like what you make, you talk to them like a friend between collections, and when something new is coming you tell them before it exists. The selling happens in those weeks of anticipation, with people who already care. Launch day is just the day the till opens.

I ran my fabric business this way, after years of running it the hard way. Year three hit £180,000, and that same year ended with me having a breakdown, because every part of the business still ran through my own two hands. So I'm not going to pretend owning your audience fixes everything. What it fixed was the fear, because my income no longer depended on whether a search box felt like showing me to anyone that week.

The £12,000 weekend that never touched Etsy search

My best proof is a Christmas launch. For six weeks beforehand I teased the collection to my email list: little glimpses of the prints, the story behind them, samples slipped into the parcels I was already posting anyway. No countdown timers, no discounts, just people who liked my fabric finding out that more of it was on the way.

On launch weekend I sent one email. That weekend did £12,000.

The copy wasn't clever, most of mine wasn't, and the photos were the same photos I always took. Those buyers had decided to buy long before the email arrived. The email just told them the doors were open.

Etsy search played no part in that weekend. If Etsy had vanished on the Friday night, I'd have taken the same money through a different checkout by Sunday, because the thing that made the sales, the warm list of people waiting, was mine, and it goes wherever I go.

How to start owning your audience

You don't need anything fancy, and you definitely don't need to close your shop while you build this.

• Make one genuinely useful freebie for your kind of buyer, a guide or a printable that actually helps, and offer it in exchange for an email address.
• Put the invitation everywhere your buyers already are. A card in every parcel, a line in your dispatch message.
• Email the list something worth reading before you ever ask them to buy. Value first, always, like hearing from a friend who happens to make lovely things.
• When your next collection is ready, don't just list it, tease it for a few weeks and then launch it to them on a day you chose.

And start smaller than you think you're allowed to. My first digital product was priced at £2.50 and sold 157 times, which is not a number anyone puts on a billboard, but that was 157 people buying directly from me, off the back of an email, with no search box involved anywhere.

If you'd like walking through the first piece of it properly, the Handmade Launch List is free, and you come out of it with a sign-up form of your own, which is the one thing on this whole page that nobody else can switch off.

Keep the shopfront if you love it. Just stop letting it own your customers
