How do I find out how my Etsy customers found me?

Go into your Shop Manager, click Stats, and Etsy will show you where your visits came from: Etsy search, the Etsy app, direct traffic, social media, outside search engines like Google, which listings pulled those visits in, and some of the actual words people typed to find you. There's more in there than that first screen suggests, and I'll walk you through reading it properly, including the bits Etsy is quietly vague about.

Before the walkthrough, though, I want to name the moment that actually sends somebody to this question, because I spent years refreshing that same screen over a shop full of quilts and bags and it was nearly always the same moment for me. The shop has been quiet, quiet enough to worry, quiet enough that you've half stopped checking, and then an order lands out of nowhere. Relief first, a proper wash of it, and then about 30 seconds later comes the question you cannot answer: where on earth did you come from? Because if you knew, you could go and do whatever it was again.

Where in Etsy do I see how buyers found my shop?

Shop Manager, then Stats, and the first thing to do is change the date range, because the default view is a short window and a short window is mostly noise. Set it to the last 30 days at least, or the whole year if you've been open that long, and the patterns start to mean something.

The traffic graph splits your visits into buckets: Etsy search, the Etsy app and other Etsy pages, direct and other traffic, social media, and Etsy marketing and SEO, which is mostly people finding you through Google. If you're running Etsy Ads, those visits show separately too.

Scroll down and it gets more useful. You can see which listings actually received the visits, and there's a search terms panel showing real phrases people typed before they landed on you. That panel is genuinely worth reading, and it's also incomplete, because Etsy only attributes a slice of searches and plenty of visits arrive carrying no term at all.

One thing to hold onto while you read any of it: these numbers count visits, and your order is a separate event. Etsy is showing you where the crowd came from that week, and nowhere on the page is a line drawn from your one sale back to the visit that caused it.

Why does so much of my Etsy traffic say direct?

Direct and other traffic is the bucket doing most of the hiding. Somebody typing your shop name into her browser lands in there, and so does a bookmark, and so does a link her sister sent her on WhatsApp, because a lot of apps strip out where a click came from before it reaches Etsy.

Which means real word of mouth, the best traffic a handmade shop can get, mostly sits in your stats looking like nothing. Somebody raved about your work at a school gate somewhere and the chart filed it under direct, next to the bots.

Timing muddies it further. A woman finds you on Instagram in March, follows you, thinks about it for weeks, then buys in May by searching your shop name. Etsy records a search visit in May, Instagram gets no credit at all, and if you'd been judging your Instagram effort by that social media number you'd have wrongly concluded it does nothing.

How do I find out more than Etsy's stats tell me?

First, read your stats per listing rather than shop-wide. The shop-level chart is an average, and an average hides the one listing quietly doing all the work. Click into your best sellers one at a time and look at where each one's visits come from, because it's common to find one product pulling steady Google traffic while everything else lives on Etsy search, and knowing that changes what you make more of and where you talk about it.

Second, give each place you post its own link. If your Instagram bio points at one listing and the card on your market stall points at another, then when one of them moves you know which door opened. Nothing technical about it, just different doors for different places, so the traffic can't all blur into one bucket.

Third, and it does slightly do my head in that nobody suggests this first: ask her. A short warm line in the thank-you note, or a message a few days after the parcel arrives, something like "I'd love to know how you came across my shop, it really helps a small business like mine." People who buy handmade tend to like talking to the maker, and most will just tell you. One honest sentence from a real customer beats an afternoon of squinting at charts, and it costs nothing.

Why can I still not tell exactly where a sale came from?

Because the dashboard's job ends at the channel. On its very best day, with a clean month of data and a generous search terms panel, Etsy can tell you which door she came through. Her name, and any way of reaching her the next time you make something new: neither of those is on any tab, because Etsy keeps the customer relationship for itself.

So next month you're back at the same screen, guessing again. A sale you can't explain is a sale you can't repeat, and that gap is the real problem here rather than the reporting.

But have you considered the sellers who can answer "how did they find me" in one breath? They're no better at reading stats than you are, they just sent an email on Tuesday morning, 4 orders arrived on Tuesday afternoon, and there was nothing left to work out, because they invited those people themselves. The mystery only exists when every sale has to come from a stranger.

Getting from mystery sales to invited ones is a bigger move than one blog post can hold, and it starts with the Handmade Launch List, which is free, at the end of which the next customer can arrive because you asked her to rather than because a search box did. If this post landed somewhere tender, that's where I'd go next.

And do still go and read your stats properly this week, per listing, longer date range, limits in mind. Just notice, while you're in there, what the page will never be able to hold.

Etsy can tell you which door she came through. Deciding who walks through it next was never going to be on a stats page
