Should I offer free shipping on Etsy?

Only if your price can pay the postage without quietly eating your wage, because free shipping is never free. Somebody pays for every parcel that leaves your house, and when the label says free, that somebody is you. The question feels hard to answer because it is a pricing question wearing a shipping question's coat, and most of us try to answer it as though the postage were the flexible part, when postage is the one number in the whole shop that refuses to negotiate.

I posted quilts for years, which I can now see was nearly the worst possible product for this particular question. Big, heavy, awkward shapes, every one slightly different, so the postage lurched about from parcel to parcel while the listing price sat still, and I spent more time than I'd like to admit at the Post Office counter watching a parcel creep into the next price band. Whether the buyer saw that cost or my price swallowed it was genuinely my choice, but the cost itself never was.

What does free shipping actually mean in practice?

It means you are paying the postage out of the sale price, and that is the entire mechanism. If your piece is £30 and postage is £4.20, you have 3 honest options: show £30 plus £4.20 delivery, list it at £34.20 with free delivery, or list it at £30 with free delivery and hand over £4.20 of your own wage every time it sells.

That third one is the version nobody chooses on purpose. It happens when you read somewhere that free shipping boosts sales, tick the box, and never redo the sums.

So do the sums, and do them on the true cost, because the stamp is only part of it. Weigh a finished item in its actual packaging and cost that packaging too, the box, the tissue, the tape, the little thank-you card, because a £1.20 box on every order is postage by another name. The number you want is the whole journey from your table to her door.

Then check the ceiling. Add that true cost to your price and look at what comparable pieces genuinely sell for, because the market price is the ceiling that actually decides this, and working backwards from it is a whole method of its own that I won't re-teach here. If your price plus postage still sits inside what similar work sells for, you can afford free delivery. If it pushes you above, the free delivery is coming out of your wage, and now you know.

Does Etsy rank free shipping listings higher?

The most useful answer I can give you is: go and check, this year, on Etsy's own pages. Etsy has at various points given a search visibility preference to shops offering free delivery in certain markets, and the details have shifted more than once. Thresholds have come and gone, and some of it applied in some countries and not others.

Anything I write here as settled fact could be quietly wrong by the time you read it, and a stale answer about search mechanics is worse than no answer at all. The seller handbook is where Etsy explains the current version, so let that be your source rather than a blog post with a date on it, including this one.

What I can say with confidence is this: a visibility boost on a listing that loses £3 every time it sells is just a machine for losing £3 more often. Whatever the algorithm is doing this year, the sums from the last section come first.

Why does free shipping work for some sellers and punish others?

Because free shipping suits small, light, consistent things. If you sell prints and stickers, every order costs roughly the same to post, that cost is a small slice of the price, and folding it in is easy. One number covers everything and the buyer never feels it.

Bulky, fragile or variable is a different life. When one order costs £3.50 to send and the next costs £9 because it is a bigger size or a longer journey, folding postage into the price forces a choice between padding every price for the worst case, which overcharges most of your buyers, or averaging it out, which means the big orders quietly lose money. Neither of those feels like pricing, both feel like guessing.

International makes the whole thing worse again, because a price with UK postage baked in looks perfectly sensible right up until somebody overseas orders it and the real cost is 3 times what your price allowed for. Big parcels going abroad can swallow the margin and then start on the wage, which is a fun thing to discover after the order has been placed.

So if your work is heavy, or fragile, or every piece is a different size, showing the postage honestly may simply be the right answer for you, whatever the general advice says. Most of that advice was written by people selling things that fit through a letterbox.

Should I show the postage or hide it in the price?

Both fears are real, which is why this argument never ends. Buyers genuinely do abandon baskets at the postage line, because a delivery charge appearing at the end reads as a penalty, a little tax on a decision she had already made, and some people close the tab on principle. And a price that has visibly swallowed the postage genuinely does look expensive next to a cheaper listing showing its delivery separately, even when the totals come out identical.

You can lose the same buyer both ways

There are middle grounds, and they are better than either extreme. Free delivery over a threshold is my favourite, because it quietly grows the basket at the same time: if delivery is free over £40, the buyer sitting at £32 starts looking for a card or a second small thing to add. Free delivery on your small, light items only, where the sums genuinely work, is another, while the big pieces show their postage honestly. Or simply price it in and say so, delivery included, in plain words, because buyers resent the cost far less than they resent the surprise.

But have you considered what every version of this question assumes? It assumes a stranger, comparing two listings side by side, with no idea who you are, deciding on whatever she can see. That is the only moment where the postage line gets to be decisive, because she has nothing else to go on. A buyer who came looking for you specifically, because she has bought before or has been watching your work for months, barely glances at the delivery line, and getting buyers like that is a game Etsy makes harder than it should be.

Getting from the first kind of buyer to the second runs on being able to reach people after they have bought, and the Handmade Launch List is where you build that, free, before there's any date in a diary. Do it once and the next buyer who loves her parcel has somewhere to go that isn't back into search.

The postage line only decides the sale when the buyer has nothing else to go on. Worth asking how often your shop is selling to somebody with nothing else to go on
