How do I get my first sale on Etsy?

Your first sale on Etsy will almost certainly come from somebody who already knows you, and hardly ever from a stranger finding you in search. I want to say that plainly right at the top, because waiting to be discovered is the single biggest reason a first sale takes months longer than it needs to, and you do not deserve months of refreshing a dashboard that says zero.

I started with glitter hairbows at the kitchen table, at a point when there was no money coming in and the alternative was going back to work early. I needed the shop to work rather than fancying a nice little hobby, so I know exactly what that early stretch feels like, checking the app after every school run in case today was the day. If that is where you are right now, quietly wondering whether you're kidding yourself, you are not deluded for trying

How long should my first sale take?

Longer than anyone warns you, if you're relying on search to deliver it. A brand new shop has no reviews, no sales history and nothing for Etsy's algorithm to trust yet, so it shows your listings to almost nobody, and the handful of strangers who do land on them see a shop with zero sales and hesitate. That's simply what new looks like from the inside of a marketplace, and it says nothing at all about your work.

And the wait is genuinely hard, so I'm not going to be breezy about it. Week 1 feels exciting, week 3 goes quiet, and somewhere around week 6 a horrible little voice starts asking whether everyone was just being polite about the things you make.

That voice is a side effect of silence, and silence is what search gives every new shop for a while. It isn't feedback.

The good news, and I mean this properly, is that your first sale doesn't have to come through that door at all. But before we get to where it actually comes from, let's cover the things that are worth doing while you're new, because some of them genuinely matter.

What actually helps a brand new Etsy shop?

Enough listings that the shop looks alive, first. A shop with 3 listings reads as abandoned even when it's actually brand new, because a buyer can't tell the difference between just opened and given up. Build up until somebody landing on your page can see there's a real maker in there, actively making.

Photographs that look like a real thing in real light, second. Window light on an ordinary morning beats a dark kitchen at 9pm every single time, and the blanket draped over the back of a chair beats the same blanket flat on the carpet. A buyer who has never met you is deciding whether the thing is real, and light is mostly how she decides.

And titles written the way a buyer actually types. The name you'd give the piece is poetic and lovely and nobody is ever typing it into a search box, so the title's job is to say the plain words she'd search for. I've gone into titles, tags and the first photo properly in a separate post, so I won't re-teach the detail here.

All of that is worth doing, and none of it is a strategy. It's table stakes, the price of sitting down at the table. It makes your shop worth arriving at, and it does nothing whatsoever about sending anybody to the door.

Where does a first sale really come from?

Everything in that last section is preparation for being found. But have you ever looked at where first sales actually come from? Nearly always, a first sale is a decision rather than a discovery, made by a person who already knew you existed before the shop did.

So the question worth asking changes shape. Instead of how do I get discovered, try this one: who already knows I make this, and have I actually told them it's for sale?

Most of us never tell anybody properly. It feels like bragging, so the shop link goes out once, buried at the end of a post, and then we call the silence not wanting to be salesy while the shop sits there with nobody in it. I understand that feeling completely, and the belief underneath it is wrong, because telling people who already like you, once and plainly, that the thing they've admired is now for sale is information they would genuinely want to have.

Think about who's actually on that list. The maker friends who watched you learn this craft. The person who complimented the bag at the school gate. Whoever asked you, months ago, whether you sell these, and you laughed it off because the shop wasn't ready yet. Write the names down and there will be more of them than you think.

A little launch that goes out to 11 people who like you will beat a listing sitting in front of a thousand strangers, because the 11 already care and the strangers never asked.

My own first sale was a pair of Swarovski earrings I'd made, listed alongside some other jewellery, and the photographs were genuinely terrible. Overhead lighting, overexposed, no editing at all, the lot. They sold inside a month anyway, and I was so proud that somebody had actually bought a thing I'd made with my hands that I don't think I noticed how bad the pictures were for another year.

Which is worth sitting with if you're currently redoing your photos for the third time. The listing was imperfect and it sold regardless, so the thing standing between most people and a first sale isn't the quality of the listing at all.

The small end is real. Every bigger thing I built afterwards started exactly there, with people I could already reach.

What should I do the moment it happens?

Enjoy it first, obviously. That notification is the proof that a real person handed over real money for a thing you made, and it doesn't matter one bit that she wasn't a stranger. Money from someone who knows you spends exactly the same as money from someone who doesn't.

Then do the bit nobody tells new makers about, which is getting a way to reach that buyer again before she disappears back into Etsy. Your first customer is also your most likely second customer, and Etsy will quietly keep her contact details to itself, so the note in her parcel needs to carry a genuine way to hear from you directly, and first look at whatever you make next beats money off every time. I've written about what happens after that first buyer separately, because keeping her is a whole subject of its own.

You might have noticed that none of this involved cracking the algorithm. The algorithm gets much easier to please once you have sales and reviews behind you, and the fastest route to those was never the search box anyway, which does my head in a bit when I see new makers being told to just keep waiting.

And if you'd like the first bit of that path built rather than described, the Handmade Launch List is free, and you come out of it with a form that works and the words already written to ask your first 11 people to use it.

Somebody has already complimented the thing you make. She just doesn't know it's for sale yet
